WindBourne wrote to mention a story covered by Forbes, detailing a possible suit against Yahoo! as a result of their involvement in a Chinese Journalist’s jailing. From the article: “Zhang Yu, representing the family of Shi Tao, said they were considering taking Yahoo Hong Kong Holdings to court either here or in the United States. ‘We believe what (Yahoo) did was illegal so we are considering taking Yahoo to court,’ Zhang told reporters, adding that Yahoo had refused to discuss the matter with him. “
For those who have not been following the story, Yahoo and Google while aggressively protecting user’s rights in western countries from the respective governments, caved in to Chinese government instances that if they want to do business in China, they have to open their user internet practices to it.
Then there were reports that Yahoo assisted the Chinese government in gathering “evidence” against a Chinese journalist, Shi Tao, because :
Shi (posted) on the Internet a government order barring Chinese media from marking the 15th anniversary of the brutal Tiananmen Square crackdown on democracy activists. Yahoo allegedly provided information that proved Shi had emailed the order from his office computer at the Contemporary Business News.
This blatant pursuit of dollars by these super large corporations really puts me off every time. Apple, Microsoft, Google and Yahoo are huge companies that started off as idealists but somewhere down the path, the ideology changed and they have now become like the Exxons and Mobils of the old.
And the worst thing is that we cannot do without them. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all turn to open source projects? That would show these multi-billion dollar companies unless, of course, these multi billion dollar companies by off the open source projects!! Then we are back to where we started.
